They are an ethnic group which inhabit a region. They understand themselves as a distinct people with their own social, economic and cultural institutions. They are the first inhabitants in an area. They differ from the today’s society. Other words for indigenous people are aborigines, aboriginal people, native people, first people and autochthonous.

The word indigenous has the meaning of “from” or “of the original origin”. That’s why every ethnic group or community is described as being indigenous. The word comes probably from the Spanish word Pueblos indigenas and describes the community of the native people in a region or a land. The international word is indigenous people, during the national description is Aborigines, Native Americans, First nation or autochthonous.

The total number of indigenous people worldwide is about 350 millions, but it is not sure because there are differences between Asia and Africa, because the government says that the population is at all indigenous. Indigenous people are therefore called as 4th world or internal colony.
The biggest indigenous peoples:
- Adivasi about 70 millions in India
- Santal about 3,2 millions in India and Bangladesh
- Indians of North America about 2,5 millions in Canada and USA
- Quechua about 12 millions in Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru
